A spectrum that wide, a .357 rifle is suited for almost any duty you can cook up, short of long-range tasks. Hunting wise, in the right hands and with the right load, the .357 Magnum will hammer everything up to deer and black bear. With that same gun you can also sling mild .38 all afternoon without once dreading the next trigger pull.There are others who enjoy using larger calibers like the .300 Winchester or even the .375 H&H. Simply put, any rifle that is capable of shooting a bullet of 150 grains at 2500 FPS will be a good moose gun. Other suitable calibers would be the .308, the .300 magnum and the .338 magnum. I use H-110 powder for all my deer hunting loads, shoot HP-38, and titegroup for my lighter loads for playing around. As your rifle is chambered in 44 Mag, it won't push the bullet fast enough to fail it. I've used this bullet for a drt neck shot and a 100 yard dash brisket shot on deer. For hogs you're gonna want a bullet with a sectional density starting with a .2-- because it's going to take a lot of momentum to push a 7/16th's inch hole through a pig. I have an 1894 in .357 mag and took 2 deer with it last year with no problem. A .44 mag should do fine on deer, especially at the 50-75 yard distance. Not sure about the hogs. My 9 yr old daughter is going to use my .357 this year as her deer rifle.Basically a .44 magnum with a longer casing, i.e. a .44 magnum-magnum. If so what do you think of it for deer hunting? A friend of mine swears by it, says it brings considerably more velocity and eeffective range than a .44 mag. I have Aug 31, 2011 · Not to mention the .357 Magnum round comparatively is cheap to 44 mag, .40 and other ballistically similar “Magnum” cartridges and is of course less expensive than semi-auto rifle calibers. The .357 Magnum/.38 special caliber can be loaded so lightly they are slightly louder than a decent fart and is also very easy and forgiving to reload unlike semi-auto cartridges.
Sep 24, 2010 · In its most powerful loads, the .44 Mag is as sensitive to case length as a rifle can be. For the standard loads, the IPSC or pin-level loads and the standard hunting load, I don't trim brass. I make sure the cases are clean and not cracked, and I load them.

Nov 16, 2011 · I had a guy who used a 357 Mag due to a double hip surgery and he did take deer with it but he was a dam good shot and had been hunting for over 50 years... Again much better rounds for hunting exist, handgun rounds were designed to stop people not deer. Balistics show my 44 Mag shoots 1160FPS with 300 grain federal ammo.

Oct 13, 2019 · I see the .357 Mag as marginal for deer and a .357 Mag rifle only a slight improvement. That said, I've taken deer with a .22 Hornet. Bullet placement is paramount! I've been close enough to a lot of deer that a .357 would have been fine, but like my .22 Hornet, it's only good for a target of "opportunity". Basically, a deer in your lap.

I have shot several deer and a few pigs with a 44 Mag, both handgun and rifle. I think IF I was going to spend the money with Mr. Bowen I would go with a 44 Mag. The 45 Cplt has a big following as well, I just prefer the 44 Mag. A 240/250gr bullet at @ 1050 to 1100 fps is a plenty good killer and has mild recoil.
